Swarovski Crystal Palace unveils a groundbreaking new collection by internationally acclaimed designers during the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2008, Milan [15th-21st April 2008]

Milan, Italy – Swarovski, the world’s leading manufacturer of precision cut crystal unveiled a dramatic new
concept at the Swarovski Crystal Palace exhibition at Via Savona 56, Zona Tortona, Milan. Swarovski invited world leading designers to conceive an atmosphere experimenting with the unique medium of crystal. The challenge – to push the boundaries of crystal and create contemporary interpretations of lighting, furniture and design. Their inspirations are derived from varied sources including the natural world, the visual arts and high technology. The results are dramatic, captivating, and give new meaning to lighting and design. Swarovski Crystal Palace is proud to present a provocative exhibition for 2008 featuring installations by:

VEIL
by PAUL COCKSEDGE
‘Veil’ by Paul Cocksedge Studio is a four metre high curtain made of 1,440 Swarovski crystals. It creates an incredible visual illusion; when viewed through a mirror, the shimmering curtain reveals its hidden secret: an iconic image set within the canvas of crystals, and when the viewer looks back at the curtain, the image disappears. Cocksedge sees this first edition of ‘Veil’ for Swarovski Crystal Palace as a romantic illusion.
PAUL COCKSEDGE
A rising star of lighting design, the young British designer Paul Cocksedge creates visually spectacular and technically ingenious lights that celebrate the magical and transformative qualities of illumination

RANDOMLY CRYSTALLINE
by FRONT
Front Design experimented with Swarovski crystal and hand blown glass to create a series of visually innovative vases and lights, of which no two are the same.
FRONT DESIGN
Swedish design group Front consists of four designers; Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken, Anna Lindgren and Katja Savstrom. They take their inspiration from animals, physics,
surroundings, and materials.
RÉ
by ZAHA HADID
Zaha Hadid’s design pushes the boundaries and preconceived notions of the chandelier, redefining the nature of the object. “From my first days in architecture at the Architectural Association, I have always been interested in the concept of fragmentation. For me the idea of fragmentation has also to do with the idea of dynamism, of a cosmic explosion of some kind. For this piece, each Swarovski crystal can be considered as an individual element that interrelates with, and responds to, every
other crystal. Locked in a spiralling vortex, the crystals direction is determined by the forces of an explosion. As with our architecture, contextual embedding is always considered. The chandelier relates to – and interacts with – each new environment in a unique manner; constantly reinventing itself and offering exciting new possibilities with each installation.”
ZAHA HADID
Zaha Hadid is a notable British Iraqi deconstructivist architect. In 2004, Hadid became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
GLOBE
by STUDIO JOB
Studio Job has created a 175cm diameter spinning globe applying 500,000 Swarovski crystals. “Maybe it’s the sense of time and gravity that touches us, maybe it is the earth that keeps turning and turning.”
STUDIO JOB
Graduates of the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel form Studio Job. From the beginning, their collaboration resulted in highly expressive, usually one-off or limited-edition artesian works.
CUPOLA
by PIERO LISSONI
Piero Lissoni’s chandelier explores the illusion of depth with light and crystal – creating an impactful architectural sphere.
PIERO LISSONI
Celebrated Italian architect, Piero Lissoni, works in all design disciplines from graphics and industrial design to architecture and interior projects. He cultivates the art of
understatement.
ELLIPSIS & FRAGMENTS
by ARNE QUINZE
Belgian designer, Arne Quinze, created “Ellipsis” a sculptural light, as well as Fragments, a space dividing sculpture that fuses the effects of material, colour and light. Staged together, they create
a landscape of sculptural forms.
ARNE QUINZE
Arne Quinze is self taught. He now produces over 15,000 pieces annually at his studio in Belgium.

CAVERN COLLECTION
by FREDRIKSON STALLARD
Transcending convention, Fredrikson Stallard has created a collection of solid monolithic furniture forms in three different materials – concrete, wood and leather. Perforated by cavernous openings, the interior surfaces are encrusted with thousands of Swarovski crystals and lit from within to add volume and density to the sculptures.
FREDRIKSON STALLARD
Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard began their collaboration in 1995 and have since become internationally recognised as leading exponents of British Avant-Garde Design.

DOUBLE SOLO
by MARCUS TREMONTO
Adding to his infamous and groundbreaking artistic interpretation, Marcus Tremento adds crystals to electro luminescent wire where he aims to mould the crystal like clay rather than restricting it to
being a mere accent to the light source.
MARCUS TREMONTO
Marcus Tremonto began his career as an artist and successfully exhibited his work in galleries, but his fascination and enjoyment of the future soon directed him to new mediums.

AQUA JEWELS
by MARCEL WANDERS
Bisazza, the famous tile manufacturer teamed up with Swarovski to create a mosaic wall designed by Marcel Wanders. The wall is encrusted with specially designed Swarovski crystal tiles.
This mosaic wall is the backdrop wall for a shower room which contains three Shower Chandeliers.
MARCEL WANDERS
Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands, and graduated from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. Marcel Wanders’ fame started with his iconic Knotted Chair, which he
produced for Droog Design in 1996.

ETERNAL
by TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA
“Eternal” is a series of acrylic blocks each containing a giant Swarovski Crystal demonstrating the juxtaposition of clear acrylic and clear Swarovski crystal. The installation presents “Eternal” as
a floating star. The Eternal series is a limited edition of 41 pieces, representative of Yoshioka’s age.
TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA
Tokujin Yoshioka established Tokujin Yoshioka Design in 2000. He has completed many projects collaborating with Issey Miyake for almost 20 years and has received critical acclaim from all over
the world.

Established & Sons is a design and manufacturing company at the vanguard of the furniture industry. From its inception in 2005, Established & Sons has been dedicated to raising design and manufacturing awareness globally and is clearly committed and effective in the pursuit and nurturing of design excellence. Some of the pieces in the collection push material technology as well as the laws of physics, others contain elegance and humour whilst all have a very clearly defined and recognisable character. As always, design integrity is clearly evident and very much in keeping with the Established & Sons’ philosophy and design dynamic.

A unique method of collaboration and commissioning has come to characterise Established & Sons’ work: the company’s mission is to harness the energy and originality of emerging design talents as well as to produce work by established contemporary designers.

Chest of drawers
by Shay Alkalay
Usually a chest of drawers consists of an exterior frame, back panel and runners on each drawer. The height is limited to the size of the frame and the drawer can only be opened in one direction. With ‘Stack’ Shay Alkalay has questioned these elements and challenged our perception of what a drawer unit can be.These individual, multi-coloured, ‘floating’ drawer units are built up to different heights, creating a tower of drawers that can be pushed and pulled in both directions. This will often result in a random and irregular formality that is both fascinating and unusual to the eye. Positioned against a wall or in the centre of a room ‘Stack’ creates a rich and wonderful spectacle of colour and form. It can be appreciated from all angles as a sculptural object as well as an entirely functional, practical item of furniture.
‘Stack’ is offered in two standard sizes (8 drawer unit and 13 drawer unit) together with two multi-colour variants.
“I think chests of drawers look more intriguing when the drawers are left partly open.” Shay Alkalay

DELTA
by BarberOsgerby (Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby)
The design of this versatile side table derives from the observation that a triangular shape fits
effectively in many arrangements within an interior: free-standing, against a wall, between or
next to other pieces of furniture. The tables are cast from a single material: a resin that has a
hollow core and provides a high-gloss finish with an unusual depth. Offered in two sizes, the
low height table functions as a coffee table or bedside table, whilst the higher version can be
used as an occasional table or plinth.

TABLE 1800×1800, TABLE 2750×900
by Caruso St John Architects (Adam Caruso & Peter St John)
This table, like much of Caruso St John’s work, refers to a familiar type. It looks like a table. It is rectilinear, it has a top, four legs, and it’s made of wood. By making it out of lumber board, an engineered timber product used for construction site hoardings, the duo presents an everyday material resembling giant plywood that is strong, stable, referential yet unfamiliar within the context of furniture design. Table 1800×1800 and Table 2750×900 are available in white Corian and black linoleum table surface options.
“I like the idea of wood for a table. I also like the similarity between the legs and the top, and how the muteness of the joints make the table look abstract. It is not builderly. It looks like a picture of a table, a bit like a sculpture by Richard Artschwager.”
Adam Caruso

POLE LIGHT
by Paul Cocksedge
This elegant table and floor light challenges the common perception that light travels in a straight line. It provides ambient light as well as a dimmable, focussed, directional beam.
Using a minimum of materials and components, it is surprisingly simple but provides a spectacle rarely found in such an everyday domestic lighting product. Light travels from a light source embedded deep within a concrete base and up through an optical grade, precisely curved, transparent acrylic rod and eventually culminates in a bright beam appearing at more than a metre from its source.
“I wanted to create the illusion of bending light on an everyday scale. In order to achieve this I needed to send rays of light on a journey of internal reflection.”
Paul Cocksedge

SIGNAL STORAGE
by Frank (Pam West & Matt Edmonds)
Inspired by rail-side metal boxes, the Signal range of cabinets and credenzas is
the latest design from Matt Edmonds and Pam West to cleverly reference familiar, infrastructural aspects of the city and our environment. Through the use of sensitive detailing and beautiful finishing the usual preconceptions and associations with
metal storage are removed and the design is elevated to something beyond just
the functional. This treatment allows Signal the capacity to sit in a domestic
environment as well as office locations more commonly associated with the genre.
Signal is available in a number of shapes and sizes, including side and low cabinets and is offered in a variety of painted finishes with flat steel or solid wood handles.
“The boxes had a certain lightness and presence of scale that we wanted to translate along with the industrial qualities of these enclosures into storage designs.” Frank

TUDOR CHAIRS
by Jaime Hayon
This series of six dining chairs was inspired by the six wives of Henry VIII. They are all formally linked but each with its own individual upholstery, finishing and personality. The designs are a clever reference to a rich part of British history, but particularly fascinating and relevant as they emanate from the arrival and objective perception of Spanish designer Jaime Hayon.
“Ever since I moved to the United Kingdom I have been fascinated by the story of Henry VIII. What a great story! One large man and six unlucky ladies. Despotic, hedonistic, passionate, headstrong and indomitable, he would be governed by neither church nor state. As a king, Henry was known to be a man of great culture who loved opulence as well as being one of the most feared monarchs of all time. When I was asked to design something for the British company Established & Sons, I decided to base my design on the most influential King of England. It is an English story for an English company.” Jaime Hayon

TWO-TIMER
by Industrial Facility (Sam Hecht)
Many cities, with London no exception, continue to experience the mass movement of people. It’s as if everyone these days has come from somewhere else. The Two Timer clock acknowledges this modern condition with two clocks sharing the same dial. How curious an idea – it’s as if a finger has stretched a round clock to form a little corner – an offspring, if you like. Two quartz movements, with a carefully devised dial, are housed in a steel frame. Designed in two sizes, it will sit happily in the home, the office, the hospital, the hotel, the airline lounge, or the foyer of a financial building. It illustrates that even with different time zones we are of one-world.
“It’s as if everyone these days has come from or is going to, somewhere else…
Two-Timer is a useful expression to this modern condition, merging two different time zones into one clock.” Sam Hecht

LOUVRE LIGHT
by Klauser & Carpenter (André Klauser & Ed Carpenter)
References to window blinds, Scandinavian lighting and the rear windows of 1980s ‘muscle’ cars are all apparent in this family of suspension lights designed by André Klauser and Ed Carpenter. Seamless pressed aluminium louvres with compound-curved corners are repeated layer upon layer. This creates a multifaceted shade that provides glare-free, directional and ambient light. It’s both a practical light source and a fascinating and formally enticing object in its own right. The long proportions and scale of Louvre make it ideal for hanging over a dining table. It is available in two sizes and offered in a variety of metal finishes which include powder-coated and coloured anodised aluminium or patinated brass.
“Our aim was to illuminate the space as well as the light itself. Above that we think Louvre is like a canvas that can change character depending on the colour and
finish.” Klauser & Carpenter

CRATE SERIES
by Jasper Morrison
The elementary properties of a found wine crate continue to inspire Jasper Morrison and they are apparent again in these three latest additions to his Crate Series. The multifunctional characteristics of series 1-5 are now complemented by the more defined typology of Crate Series 6, 7 and 8 in the form of Bookshelf, Wardrobe and Low Chair. All are constructed from the same solid pine whilst the familiar fabric hinge is also used on the wardrobe doors and ingeniously on the chair – linking multiple wooden slats to form a seat and back which then rests on a generous tubular steel frame. The emphasis on honest materials, proportion and usability is the thread that links this whole series and its evolution is a fascinating insight into how the most basic of found, functional objects can inspire a focussed and cohesive collection of furniture.

FRAME CHAIR
by Wouter Scheublin
Wouter Scheublin liaises functionality with the beauty of construction and shows a refined eye for detail in his design of the Frame Chair. Blessed with good proportions and seating comfort, the chair is full of cleverly engineered, reasoned character and achieves a unique formality that is rare within the competitive, overcrowded realms of chair design. Beech laths are covered with a seat and backrest of ply with oak veneer thus providing a subtle texture that shows through a lacquer finish. Frame chair is offered in painted or shown wood finishes and is also produced in aluminium.
“I like the way a construction of simple laths, when assembled, suddenly transforms into a form with character.” Wouter Scheublin

UNIFORM CHAIR
by Alexander Taylor
Following on from designs such as Fold, Tank and Twin, Uniform chair continues Alex Taylor’s exploration into the process of manipulating sheet metal. Intelligent, sophisticated folds within the legs and frame define its form, whilst a classic combination of materials and finishing further enhance the character of this versatile occasional, dining chair. Plywood seat pads provide comfort and structure and also reference the chair’s inspiration from old wooden classroom chairs.
“Whilst searching through a flea market I found some familiar old school, children’s wooden chairs and bought a couple for home. These have become the inspiration for the Uniform Chairs.” Alexander Taylor

TORCH LIGHT
by Sylvain Willenz
Made from a moulded textured plastic, the ‘Torch Light’ comes in three versions: the small cone, the small rounded and the large cone. All sizes can be suspended from the ceiling in single units, arranged in bunches of 10 or 20, or used singularly on a tabletop or in the corner of a room. ‘Torch Light’, like much of Sylvain’s work, is inspired by archetypal objects
- in this case, the simple silhouette of a typical hand-held torch or car headlight. ‘Torch Light’ is offered in three different colours, including black.
“This is how I like to think of objects. What would they be like as shadows? How can they be normal and recognisable, yet slightly sophisticated and elegant? It’s playful, graphic… like an icon.” Sylvain Willenz

HEIDI
by Sebastian Wrong
This stool design is about basic simplicity of form and function; combining a classic
tractor seat, for its shape and comfort, with a nostalgic, rustic, three leg, timber milking stool. Made from pigmented polyurethane resin and oiled European Oak the stool cleverly combines the clunky mass of a solid coloured seat with an elegant tapered, geometric timber leg construction. Heidi stool is available in two heights with the option of a red,
ivory or black seat.
“The experience of sitting on these stools should be reassuring, tactile
and aesthetic, like the sun setting in the Alps!” Sebastian Wrong

SURFACE TABLE
John Barnard & Terence Woodgate COLLABORATION 2008
Two Royal Designers for Industry, one from the world of furniture design and one from the world of Formula One racing car design, have collaborated on this super slim composite table. By using state-of-the-art autosport / aerospace technology, and exploiting the inherent rigidity of layered carbon fibre, Terence Woodgate and John Barnard have created an astonishing table that spans 3metres and has a thickness of just 2mm at the edge (five times thinner than its nearest equivalent). ‘Surface Table’ is available in a walnut veneer or unidirectional natural carbon fibre finish.
“We were interested in taking the form of a normal table, one with legs at each corner, as far as we possibly could. It became a search for perfection. Radius corners, round legs, domed feet and rounded edges all accentuate the slimness of the design making the entire form a seamless, blended geometric surface.” Terence Woodgate

Marbelous ///The world of adults furniture and the world children’s toys don’t seem to belong together. From my childhood I remember it was always exciting to combine these two. I used the woodcarvings of furniture as a playfield for my puppets, to play in a new world. Functional woodcarvings and decoration you can play with. Applying woodcarvings in a piece of furniture that combines the world of adults with the world of the children. A marble track in a table. I’ve created this new type of functional woodcarving, that invites you to play with…
Accidentels ///Everything in our natural world is shaped by the environment it lives in. In a world where all products come rolling of the belt looking identical to the millions of others rolling of the same belt there’s a break with the natural growth and evolution. For our material world I went back to the origin, the root of the product; the factory and process where it is born. To let the process itself influence and develop the product.By electro-plating on plastic the plastic gets new characteristics. Which gives it new possibilities in use, function and life. And by letting the process of the electro-plating itself run it’s own course the outcome becomes unique and unpredictable. The process of electro-plating not only gives the plastic product a new function it makes it into a natural grown unique object.

Bastard ///The bastard is a combination of two only to become one non. It finds his roots in the production methods and the materials of a furniture company. Even though his looks on first glans don’t seem to have any links with the company and seem to be derived only from me the opposite is actually true. As I developed a method to create a chair with the leftover trash leather from the factory. Factually the shapes from the leftover pieces decide the shape of the whole chair. As the technique of stitching the pieces together follows the outlines of the leftovers. The seed planted by the production methods with the nurture and care from me becomes the BASTARD.
Past Tense (Vanishing Memories)///Yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Every moment is our history and even now, our past is passing by. And the only way to hold these moments is through our memories.Past Tense. But how much can we remember our past? The design shows how fast, and consistently we lose our memories. On the table, new memories are made but at the same time it starts to vanish away. People are able to see how their memory disappears.
‘Buitenbeentje’ (Dutch for odd man out) ///’Buitenbeentje’ is a result of my fascination for everything that differs the normal: the odd man out, the freaks. Certain appearances that are so ugly and disgusting that they become interesting. A photograph of a men with elastic skin inspired me to capture a moment of movement. These products with legs made of polyurethane casting resin represent that movement congealed in material. They may look fluid but in fact, they’re strong enough to carry weight.
GrandChair ///Telling stories, singing songs, playing games and telling stories about their past: grandparents and grandchildren interact at different levels with each other. To bring Jeltethem even closer together, Jelte van Geest designed a rocking chair in which they can rock together. Next to each other or facing one another. Lift the children’s seat, turn it 180 degrees, and they can sit facing one another. Rocking together will enhance the interacting even more.
Helica ‘Carnea’ ///The ‘Helica’ series consists of ceramic objects, inspired by mathematical patterns and ratio that Mother Nature uses to create. At a distance it may seem random, but all is created in Fibonacci-spirals and Golden Ratio. Everything is perfectly logical. By zooming in on natural creations that surround us we become more aware of the complexity and at the same time clarity of life. The objects are named in Latin, the same way as plants. Helica ‘Carnea’ means ‘Light pink’ Spiral, there’s also brown (‘Brunea’) and dark pink (‘Rosea’).
Tre di Una family of chairs ///Tre di Una (“Three from One”), family of chairs products were born from my interest in joinery, as a method of construction as well as a concept. It was reaction towards the seemingly seamlessness of products and the growingly complex systems that support that quality. Looking at pre-industrial revolution manufacturing and craft techniques, an appreciation of honest exploitation of materials to produce objects grew. Experimenting with an epoxy clay normally used for industrial purposes, I sought to exploit and represent the material by unleashing it onto the most iconic of everyday artifacts; a wooden chair. The contrast of the synthetic versus the natural, in addition to the organic interventions at the interstitial points, I broke down a rigid image and functional structure and transmuted it into hybrid creatures that suggest possibilities, new aesthetics and functions. Thus resulting in a family of Low, Dining and High chairs from the components of an iconic and normal beech chair.
A Restless Chairacter /// We people are shaping products, but after all it’s these products which are shaping us (in many ways and different levels). Especially chairs. They’re often putting us in a static position, which is in conflict with the human body. A restless chairacter is about sitting. Sitting as a verb, as something dynamic. This chairacter captures the quality of an old wobbling chair. (That’s also why it looks being painted and overpainted again.) It appears to be straight, stiff and uncomfortable. It’s not, it’s flexible because it’s made for wobbling. The chairacter comes alive while touching and causes an interaction; a dynamic way of sitting on a archetype chair. The internal construction is like a sleeping beauty hiding underneath her rubber skin.

Tapepot ///The tapepot was born in a project called ‘schizophrenic skin’ which is about applying a new skin around pieces of old furniture. The original teapots come from a second-hand store (where they were standing beside each other already). I merged the teapots by giving them a taped skin. By making the tapepot out of ceramic the construction ended up in details. A new quality of pouring tea comes within the shape.
KOELKACHEL (The Warm Fridge) ///A Lost product, with lost heat, for lost time. A warm fridge-seat which belongs to the open kitchen/living area. A retrospective of the kitchen and its use. The pipe which is usaly on the back of the refrigerator, is losing warmt in order to cool the inside. The KOEL- KACHEL is using this waste-heath underneath a seat to create a traditional comfort for a new environment.
Bigfoot ///The Bigfoot is designed from a new vision on living: open up and come together. The piece of furniture redefines the definition of a chair and sitting on it. The Bigfoot is a small ‘chair’ and has one ‘big foot’ which can be use as a second seat. The open structure is honest; what you see is what you get and what you don’t need isn’t there. The ‘chair’ completely covered with felt for a soft and emotional touch.
Karakters ///Upholstering furniture that desires to conquer the non-used spaces in our living enviroment. They find there origin in recognizable but unusual positions that we often take in on our furniture , like sitting on the armrest of a couch with you’re feet not touching the ground, lean against a higher piece of furniture or rolling yourself up in the corner of your sofa. Created like a new font/character they become a family in shape, with fabric that reminds us of clothing, based on human positions. With a hard-polystyrene inside, they weight apiece 7 kilo, they are really mobile in finding a place in the livingroom
Grace Table ///Grand furniture pieces are marvelous, although rather tricky to transport. handle or store. I admire the capacity of inflatable furniture to decrease its size to modest volumes. Inflatable furniture has many disadvantages such as stability, rigidity, the control of its shape etc. Inflatable chairs and couches have been around for a long time. I am trying to move toward this concept from a different approach: inflatable tables do not exist because of the limitations of inflatable furniture, starting with the fact that flat surfaces are difficult to achieve. After having researched many types of inflatable materials and products, I came upon a technology used within the British Navy Rescue. Inflatable rescue platforms are built in grand sizes and utilize a material called “Drop-Thread”. A spin-off from the velvet manufacturing industry, Dropthread (Dropstitch) fabric first found application in the military arena. This material is composed of two layers of waterproof fabric, which are interconnected by thousands of strands, allowing one to achieve flat surfaces once inflated. I have worked in collaboration with Eurocraft, a leading manufacturer of inflatable structures in the United Kingdom. And developed a grand table, big enough to accommodate 10 guests when inflated, and small enough to fit in a duffel bag when deflated.
hanger chair /// Occasional furniture. The name should be self explanatory, but it is somewhat incorrect in most cases. These pieces tend to lie around the house, stacked in a corner, or in an unused room. When space is an issue, as is the case for most European city dwellers, an object such as a folding chair will clutter up the precious available space. The Hanger Chair is a folding chair based on one of the ultimate storage systems: the modest hanger. It allows us to store clothes in an orderly fashion. Most houses or flats are equipped with a wardrobe to receive the object. By morphing the function of the hanger with that of the folding chair, a new hybrid is born: a Hanger Chair that has a function, even when not in use, to store our clothes in an orderly fashion.
“House on the table” /// “House on the table” is a personal office table. People have a desire to have their own room or special space. When they are children, they play with doll houses, in toy houses, or in tree houses. After they grow up, the shape is different, but they still want their own special space like an office fit for a boss. However, much too often, their space becomes as dry as dust.
“CORIAN® loves MISSONI” is an exhibition that creates a visionary residential interior with kitchen, bath, living and dining areas expressing the design versatility of DuPont™ Corian® solid surfaces through the style of Missoni. These interior environments will be at once rational and essential, yet rich in colour, taste and imagination, reflecting the extraordinary creativity and the skills in colour research and combination that have made the Missoni style so unique and distinctive since the 60’s. “CORIAN® loves MISSONI”:one of the must see in the 2008 Milan week of design.

The Little Wild Garden of Love
Moroso interprets outdoor products in its own unique and original way bucking the trend and commissioning Tord Boontje to design this season’s installation, believing there is no-one better than him capable of generating the garden of our dreams.

And us find enchanted and magical nature in the Moroso showroom of Via Pontaccio, which, with the unmistakeable touch of Boontje, brilliant creator of fantastic worlds which merge the imagination and the reality, becomes “The Little Wild Garden of Love”.

The title of the installation communicates the essence and the meaning of this world, created to tell of a bold, eclectic, wild, multicultural and multicoloured collection born from true passion and fruit of the great love between the company and the designer.

Tord Boontje, interpreting nature in an abstract way, bestows us with an enchanting garden made of fabric panels, lights, colours, circles, mirrors and special effects, dividing the space into different areas which need to be dicovered, each with its own original, unique atmosphere.
Working as a stylist for the greek magazine MAISON & DECORATION, I had the opportunity to visit Milan during the Salone del Mobile exhibition. For this reason, I would like to thank my Milan leader..Makis Tsakpinoglou (editor in chief of the greek magazine MAISON & DECORATION) for the “must see” tips of the design week and for his “always welcome” design lessons. I would also like to thank Agapi Tsakpinoglou (publishing director of the greek magazine MAISON & DECORATION), for her awesome design-gift.. I’m more than thankful for their support..

Milan’s Salone del Mobile ranks as the world’s biggest industrial design event with the city taken over by exhibitions, events and parties and I’m going to publish all the honorable mentions of my experience in the city..the following days!

Part of the Salone del Mobile was Salone Satellite , which was held in a space designed specifically for the occasion within the Milan Fairgrounds in Rho and many young talented designers were gearing up for the annual celebration of creativity.

The following selections are some of my favourites from Salone Satellite 2008. A design starter of fresh ideas and conceptual projects.
Veuve Clicquot Rosé inspires Karim Rashid:
Globalight is an innovative and unique reinterpretation of a chandelier. For a moment… so romantic… so rosé… so Veuve Clicquot

Created by Karim Rashid, the limited-edition Veuve Clicquot Globalight is an invitation to romanticism. This ultra contemporary chandelier creates a soft pink halo of light and a dream like atmosphere wherever it goes. It transforms an intimate candle lit dinner between partners or friends. It keeps Veuve Clicquot Rosé at the ideal temperature for 2 hours.

You can take Veuve Clicquot Globalight wherever you go, it glows in its surroundings and creates a beautiful ambiance for the perfect champagne moment. Easy to carry, Veuve Clicquot Globalight is a design jewel with pure and sensual lines. Its brushed aluminium structure fits perfectly in modern design surroundings or a more traditionally styled room.

Veuve Clicquot Globalight is a state-of-the-art technology and design piece. The highly sophisticated system provides light without warming the lamp and transferring heat to the bottle of champagne. Zumbotel, a world expert in lighting, has conceived and manufactured this unique and complex technology. The pink light is the heart of this unique piece and it creates a romantic ambiance wherever it goes.

Veuve Clicquot Rosé
The wine has a luminous colour with an attractive pink hue. The wine works its magic – this delectably full champagne can be enjoyed as a true delicacy. A deliciously fruity wine in early bloom, this is a wonderful aperitif to be shared as a twosome or simply with friends. Its superb rosé colour adds a daring, contemporary and romantic touch!

words by Karim
__
“When Veuve Clicquot asked me to design a new project for their champagne, to continue the sensual integration of the immaterial and the material as I had done with the Loveseat, I immediately drew an elliptical scribble around the VC rose bottle as if to denote the intent – this is what I must do – and thought how could I bring light and champagne together? – and suddenly realized that my scribble was the idea in itself – ‘surround the bottle with illumination’ – embrace the bottle with a dynamic energetic magnetism – encapsulate the bottle with warmth, so I literally made an elliptical object and designed Globalight – like a purse, or a handbag, the ovaloid vignettes the champagne – lights it, glorifies it, and embraces the fabulous pleasurable experience of drinking my favorite champagne. Salut!” Globalove, Karrim

Veuve Clicquot Globalight by Karim Rashid
A world renowned designer, an iconic creator of designand light pieces, and a source of daring, playful,
minimalism and sensual inspiration – Karim Rashid collaborates with the House of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin for the second time. Following the release of the “Veuve Clicquot Loveseat”,Karim Rashid drew inspiration from Veuve Clicquot Rosé to create “Globalight”, a multi functional design object representing modern romanticism. An award winning English-Egyptian artist living in New-York, Karim Rashid is a leading figure in the fields of product and interior design, furniture, lighting and art. His work is in the permanent collections of 15 Museums world wide including MoMA in NY.
Fabio Novembre
Teach me the freedom of swallows

Rotonda di via Besana
11 April – 8 June 2008

An event celebrating the young Italian star in the world of design, capable of emblematic, sensational and impressive gestures. The exhibition, curated by Beppe Finessi, is a courageous tribute to an author at the height of his creativity and vitality, between industrial, interior and set design.

A brand new interpretation of the space, in which the relation with the existing structure has been conceived in a dialectical and complex way, between affinity and contrast. At the entrance the exhibition set up totally denies the location, limits contracts and dissolves it, creating some kind of silent preamble in fragments, where – in a gathered and closed ambient, the smallest and more precious objects of Novembre’s work are displayed.

Then you immediately find yourself under the skylight, completely plunged in the space of the Rotonda. This second moment, blasting, fluent and impressive as in a movie, is dominated by the presence of a long ribbon that physically follows back the flight paths of the swallows, that the subtititle of the exhibition evokes – from a small sheet of paper that a street poet gave to Novembre some years ago – and takes the visitor along the same free paths of project of the author.

The interpretation of the work of this young author becomes the chance for a true original staging. Poising in the air, the ribbon brings us in the reading of Novembre’s thought through the fields of affections on which his creativity has been reflecting for years: heart, love, sex, body, nature, profiles and…long flights. A journey through interior designs, objects from the past (the first objects, dating back to 1988, had already received awards and kudos from the critics) and others displayed for the very first time, all interpreted in a strikingly original way.

Concomitantly with the exhibition a monograph on the author will be published by Skira.

PRESS RELEASE

MILANO DESIGN WEEK 2008

Andrée Putman for Bisazza
Jaime Hayon for Bisazza

Milan, 16-21 April 2008
Superstudio Più
Via Tortona 27
Press preview:
Tuesday 15 April 2007, from 3pm to 7pm

During the Salone del Mobile 2008, Bisazza presents two striking installations by Andrée Putman and Jaime Hayon at Superstudio Più.

The installations, are not only an expression of two totally opposite styles but also of two different generational approaches, the French design icon and the young Spaniard interpret mosaic using their own original, highly distinctive language.

In this installation mosaic finds the maximum expression of its great artistic value and versatility in an entirely surprising way.

“ENTREVUE”, DESIGN BY ANDRÉE PUTMAN

Displaying pure, essential lines, furnishings created for the first time for Bisazza by Andrée Putman – the French darling of design acclaimed around the world – express the sophisticated, unique style which has always been her calling card, elevating her to the status of veritable icon of elegance.

Playful contrast between black and white – a hallmark of many of the designer’s projects – pervades the installation and creates a thought-provoking atmosphere, the perfect setting for pieces with such sophisticated, timeless style.

The visitor discovers the Entrevue collection little by little inside a dramatic box, the outside of which is covered with black mosaic tiles while the inside features luminous walls which magically change colour. Invited to explore this space, visitors follow a pre-defined route along a corridor where, in a crescendo of expectations, an enveloping chequerboard mesh resembling a protective net allows glimpses of objects beyond.

Inside this setting, the Zenith and Correspondances tables reveal their classic identity through a contemporary look.

A light source, coming from the gold mosaic, is the element of seduction of Zenith, the round table produced in corian and proposed in two colour versions: white corian with yellow gold mosaic and grey corian with white gold mosaic.

For Correspondances, the lacquered wooden writing desk available in four colour versions, the predominant decorative motif is alternating mosaic tiles, each model featuring two contrasting colours: black and white, blue and white, black and grey, each with a single gold tile “set” into the surface. The original arrangement of two overlapping surfaces gives movement and versatility to this item of furniture.

“One can sense a profound, precious energy in the Bisazza family. Their love of precision prevents them from settling for an object that is too overtly “present” and which might therefore detract from other objects close at hand. “Entrevue” is a collection for the home which is aggressively ambitious. The “Zenith” table miraculously draws on a hidden light source. The “Correspondances” writing desk comprises large, versatile surfaces characterised by an overlap.
Timeless, what these two objects have in common is invincible seduction. “
Andrée Putman

“JET SET”, DESIGN BY JAIME HAYON

The atmosphere in the second space dedicated to the project by Jaime Hayon is totally different. The Spanish designer continues his collaboration with Bisazza, still surprising us with his typically flamboyant, Mediterranean creative ability, which reveals his “playful” approach and his fun way of interpreting mosaic.

A setting reminiscent of a hangar, totally atypical and chic, hosts a sophisticated “fantasy” aeroplane with a decidedly surreal shape, decorated with white gold mosaic tiles, leather inserts and featuring a neat lounge with padded white sofas.

Completing the luxury jet look is a black and white striped floor in Bisazza glass chip mosaic tiles, with interesting reflections between light and shadow creating a movie-set atmosphere.

Through playful language, irony coupled with the creative, fantastic flair of Jaime Hayon allows visitors to escape from reality, “diverting them” towards a surreal, poetical world.

“I like the idea of being able to create a fun, more sophisticated version of an object as serious and functional as an aeroplane.
Set in a very glamorous hangar, this aeroplane is a light-hearted work with an unusual and enchanting look, complete with a glass cabin, leather wings and coloured missiles and symbols alluding to love.
Mosaic tiles in white gold and fibreglass make this aircraft luxurious and surreal.
The striped floor in Bisazza black and white glass tiles conveys a feeling of speed and movement.
The installation’s spectacular atmosphere, created by the use of reflectors, is reminiscent of a scene from an old Hollywood movie. At the heart of the aircraft is a circular lounge. I can imagine this thing flying, with a couple of lovers on board sipping champagne, the atmosphere charged with positive energy and emotions during their flight.
Jet Set is a sitting room cum aeroplane: an objet d’art in an imaginary installation which displays the potential of Bisazza mosaic.”
Jaime Hayon

PROFILE OF ANDRÉE PUTMAN

Born in Paris, Andrée Putman is one of the most internationally renowned designers. She has signed important projects of architecture and interior design for both public and private spaces in countries all over the world.
In one stage of her activity, more precisely in the Eighties, her interest in art and design led her to re-present and interpret some works by Eileen Gray, Robert Mallet- Stevens, and Mariano Fortuny.
Some of the most significant realisations include Morgan’s Hotel in New York, the Centre d’Art Plastique Contemporain in Bordeaux, the furnishings for the interior of the Concorde for Air France, the Pershing Hall Hotel in Paris, the Blue Spa and the swimming pool of the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich, the boutique Guerlain in Paris, many private residences and recently also “The Putman” skyscraper in Hong Kong.
As a designer she has created a line of jewels and some items of silverware for Christofle, a porcelain collection for Gaia & Gino and the reinterpretation of the famous Steamer Bag for Louis Vuitton.
Another of her recent activities was the “Espace Andrée Putman”, an area so called as a tribute to her, located in the Stade de France in Paris.
In January 2008, Bertrand Delanoë, the Mayor of Paris, appointed her President of the first Comité Design, an association specially created to advise and support the administration in all interventions and projects for the city.

PROFILE OF JAIME HAYON

Born in Madrid in 1974, Jaime Hayon is a young designer who, right from the start of his career in 2001 when he opened his own studio, has overcome those boundaries that traditionally separate the world of art from that of design. He devotes himself to the design of various objects, furnishing accessories and toys as well as the coordination and staging of exhibitions and interior design projects for public spaces, including shops and restaurants.
In 2004 he designed a line of accessories for the AQHayon bathroom by Artquitect, proving he’s a decidedly avant-garde designer. He has also been highly acclaimed for his artistic installations, like that at the David Gill Gallery in London, the Vitra Design Museum and the London Design Museum as well as other prestigious galleries: Vivid, Aram, etc
Awarded by Wallpaper, Elle Deco and London Design Festival for his work, Hayon is considered one of the most talented up-and-coming designers in the world.
He collaborates with several companies, including Metalarte, Artquitect Edition, BD Barcelona, Swarovski, Pallucco, Piper Heidsieck and Camper and since 2006 has been artistic consultant to Lladrò.
Many International design magazines have dedicated ample space to him and praised his projects, and some have featured him on their cover: Der Spiegel, Icon and How to spend it, the Financial Times colour supplement.

Demisch Danant is pleased to announce an exhibition of artist Felice Varini, on view April 11 – May 17, 2008. Felice Varini rejects the traditional canvas for his paintings, working instead with the factual reality of existing architectural space, both interior and exterior. His site-specific paintings intervene on the spaces in the exact condition they were found, highlighting the architecture as opposed to concealing it.

The paintings consist of fragments, which when viewed from one specific vantage point, as chosen by the artist, form a two-dimensional geometric figure. Since the image is projected over different surfaces instead of one single plane, it is immediately segmented by the space’s reality and appears fragmented when viewed from all other angles. The pictorial fragments themselves, however, appear capable of standing by themselves and form other individual vantage points depending on the viewer. The fragments also allow us to see characteristics of the architecture that they paradoxically conceal. This illusion, the contradiction between the material reality and the perceived reality, is the subject of Varini’s work.
Felice Varini was born in 1952 in Locarno, Switzerland. His work spans several decades at an international level. The Museé des Beaux Arts, Arras, France recently held a solo exhibition of Varini’s work entitled ‘Une Saison Suisse’ (Dec 2007). Selected group exhibitions include: the Osaka Art Kaleidoscope, Osaka, Japan (2007); and Versailles Off, Chateau of Versailles, France (2006). Public works include ’3 Ellipses for 3 Locks at Cardiff Bay Barrage, commissioned by Cardiff Harbour Authority, Cardiff, Wales (2007). Varini currently lives in Paris.

GET INSPIRED
Stone Designs was born out of the restless desire of its two creators (Eva Perez Rego 1974, Cutu Mazuelos 1973) to offer products that come straight from the heart, going beyond questions of technical limitations or the latest tendencies.

Eva and Cutu consider the pieces in their collection as extensions of themselves in their purest state without censorship or filters, expressions of their way of understanding life and how we relate to our surroundings.

Their personalities are present in everything they do: their restlessness, their yearnings, their fears and passions, their love of nature, and their desire to reflect all this in their products. Six years ago they edited their fist catalogue, and now, their new catalogue offers the best pieces of these years.

If you can see that behind the selection of pieces grouped in this catalogue (pdf) there is much more than simply design, then you will have entered into the world of Stone Designs.
