11 April – 17 May, 2008

Demisch Danant is pleased to announce an exhibition of artist Felice Varini, on view April 11 – May 17, 2008. Felice Varini rejects the traditional canvas for his paintings, working instead with the factual reality of existing architectural space, both interior and exterior. His site-specific paintings intervene on the spaces in the exact condition they were found, highlighting the architecture as opposed to concealing it.
The paintings consist of fragments, which when viewed from one specific vantage point, as chosen by the artist, form a two-dimensional geometric figure. Since the image is projected over different surfaces instead of one single plane, it is immediately segmented by the space’s reality and appears fragmented when viewed from all other angles. The pictorial fragments themselves, however, appear capable of standing by themselves and form other individual vantage points depending on the viewer. The fragments also allow us to see characteristics of the architecture that they paradoxically conceal. This illusion, the contradiction between the material reality and the perceived reality, is the subject of Varini’s work.
Felice Varini was born in 1952 in Locarno, Switzerland. His work spans several decades at an international level. The Museé des Beaux Arts, Arras, France recently held a solo exhibition of Varini’s work entitled ‘Une Saison Suisse’ (Dec 2007). Selected group exhibitions include: the Osaka Art Kaleidoscope, Osaka, Japan (2007); and Versailles Off, Chateau of Versailles, France (2006). Public works include ‘3 Ellipses for 3 Locks at Cardiff Bay Barrage, commissioned by Cardiff Harbour Authority, Cardiff, Wales (2007). Varini currently lives in Paris.

Does the illusion hold when you watch it in real life? Because you can see in three dimensions?

Woah! Very awesome. It almost looks like someone just pasted the final designs over the pictures until you see them from other viewpoints. Thumb-up’d.

Not photoshoped. The first one is in cardiff, the capital of wales. I’ve seen it, and it looks like the picture you see even when your standing there.

You gotta be kidding! JImguru is right. These are Photoshopped alright… and poorly at that!

why cant this be real
Not shopped, easy to do even. Just project the shapes as light at night from the viewpoint and go and paint everywhere the light hits.

It is real
Why can’t people do the slightest bit of research before claiming that something is photo shopped (or real for that matter). I am not asking you to even venture out to a museum or library, just google Felice Varini and you will see.
Or is Google in on the conspiracy, Johnny?

That’s some incredible work – and those who think it’s photoshopped can check out videos of this work like “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybVNs2xIzdY”. Maybe the video was photoshopped too?

The photoshop comments are from people jumping in on an internet fad where one leaves a comment claiming something is photoshopped whether it actually is or not.
Usually this will consist of someone saying something along the lines of:
“This is clearly a photoshop. I can tell by the pixels and the reflections. I have seen a few shops in my time”
In any case, this work is very nice, and interesting. I especially like the youtube video included here to show someone shifting in and out of perspective.

why do people always say photoshopped to everything, damn its annoying,
you just show how ignorant you really are!
there is something like that in melbourne australia with floor numbers in a carpark..
oh and just a suggestion, spend the hours learning how to use Photoshop and you will realize that people that know how to use, it dont waste there time trying to impress uneducated people like you..

I’m so tired of these fuckin’ things. yeah, big fuckin’ deal, someone painted odd shapes so that, ON FILM, they appear as somewhat-optical illusions. BIG FUCKING DEAL! They look great in pictures, but they WOULDN’T LOOK LIKE THAT IF YOU VISITED. I don’t care how great the paint job is; most of us have depth perception.
